I added memory to my linux workstation and found that even though it was a 64 bit installation addressing 4gb memory was not simple.
I found that 64 bit Centos will work with my motherboard and video card and yield the full 4096 mb of memory. Fedora 8 would not work with the same setup. Well, actually it would work but the cursor was a grainy 1″ square block. I also tried Kubuntu and Bsddesktop as well. All would work fine if you changed the bios settings to eliminate the memory hole work around (you only get 3.2 gb of memory in that configuration).
Apparently, pci-e adapter uses a portion of memory that conflicts with the os when you have greater than 3.2 gb of memory present. The Centos/Red Hat kernel configuration does not have the problem.
